Apple is set to roll out a new device leasing program in the United States starting Tuesday, July 28. Dubbed the "Apple Upgrade" program, it will replace the company's existing iPhone Upgrade Program for new customers. The shift marks a significant change in how consumers can acquire Apple's popular hardware, moving towards a lease model.

The new initiative is a partnership with the buy-now, pay-later provider Klarna. Under the "Apple Upgrade" program, customers will be able to lease a wide range of Apple products, including most iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch models. Terms for these leases will vary by device: iPhones and Apple Watches will have 24-month lease agreements, while iPads and Macs will feature 36-month terms. At the conclusion of the lease period, users will have several options, such as returning the device, upgrading to a newer model, or potentially paying a fee to retain ownership.

However, not all devices will be eligible for the new program. Select lower-cost options, such as the Apple Watch SE, the entry-level iPad, the upcoming iPhone 16, and the MacBook Neo, will not be included in the "Apple Upgrade" offering. This suggests Apple is targeting its mid-to-high-end devices for this new leasing structure.

Leasing Focus and AppleCare+ Changes

A key distinction from the previous iPhone Upgrade Program is that the "Apple Upgrade" plans will not automatically bundle AppleCare+ coverage into the monthly payment. This means customers will need to opt-in for extended warranty and accidental damage protection separately, potentially altering the perceived value proposition for some users. Apple plans to market the new program as a way to achieve lower monthly payments compared to its current financing options, emphasizing the leasing aspect over traditional installment plans.

The move to a lease-focused program by Apple indicates a broader industry trend towards subscription and leasing models for consumer electronics. This approach allows companies to ensure a steady revenue stream and encourages more frequent device upgrades, keeping customers within their ecosystem. For consumers, it offers a path to acquiring newer technology with potentially more manageable upfront costs, although the long-term financial implications of leasing versus outright purchase or traditional financing continue to be debated.

Existing customers enrolled in the current iPhone Upgrade Program will be permitted to remain in their current agreements for the time being, according to reports. Apple stopped accepting new sign-ups for that program on the same day the new initiative launches, signaling a definitive transition away from the older model for new customers. The "Apple Upgrade" program represents Apple's latest effort to adapt its sales strategies to evolving consumer preferences and financial models in the tech market.
