GoPro Mission 1 Pro Action Camera: Stunning 8K Video Quality
GoPro's new Mission 1 Pro action camera boasts an unprecedented 1-inch sensor for 8K video, offering superior image quality but at a premium price point and larger size.

GoPro has unveiled its latest action camera, the Mission 1 Pro, featuring a groundbreaking 1-inch sensor that enables stunning 8K video recording. This new model aims to deliver unparalleled video quality for action enthusiasts, even in challenging lighting conditions, though it comes with a significant price increase and larger physical dimensions compared to previous GoPro devices.
The Mission 1 Pro is equipped with a 50-megapixel, 1-inch sensor, measuring 13.2 x 8.8mm, which significantly enhances light-gathering capabilities. This larger sensor allows for 8K video capture at up to 60 frames per second, surpassing the capabilities of rivals like the DJI Osmo Action 6. Even if footage is ultimately downscaled to 4K, the high resolution provides ample flexibility for reframing shots or creating vertical content for platforms like TikTok. The camera also supports 4:3 open gate recording at 8K resolution, a feature previously unseen in the action camera market.
GoPro's new lens offers a wide 156-degree field of view, with adjustable modes including an ultra-wide "Superview" (16mm), a stabilized Wide view (16-24mm), and a distortion-free Linear mode (22-27mm). The camera is available in three configurations: the Mission 1 Pro, capable of 8K 60fps and 4K 240fps; the Mission 1, limited to 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps; and the Mission 1 Pro ILS, which includes a Micro Four Thirds mount for interchangeable lenses and is targeted at professional users seeking high video quality in a compact form factor. This professional model is slated for release later in 2026.
Enhanced Features and User Experience
Despite its advanced capabilities, the Mission 1 Pro is larger and heavier than its predecessor, the GoPro Hero 13, weighing 0.46 pounds compared to the Hero 13's 0.35 pounds. This difference, while seemingly minor, can be noticeable when mounted on a helmet. However, the camera's controls have been improved, with more accessible record and power buttons. GoPro has also streamlined the menu system, consolidating key imaging settings like bit depth, shutter speed, and Hypersmooth stabilization under a dedicated "Image" menu for quicker adjustments. The camera features larger displays, including a 1.4-inch front LCD and a 2.59-inch rear OLED screen, which are bright and clear even in daylight. The mounting system remains the same as the Hero 13, allowing for quick magnetic attachment or traditional "fingers" for compatibility with a wide range of accessories.
Battery life sees a substantial improvement, with the Mission 1 Pro delivering over three hours of recording at 4K 30fps, nearly double that of the Hero 13. Even at the demanding 8K 60fps setting, users can expect over an hour of continuous recording. The Enduro 2 battery supports PD2.0 fast charging, reaching full capacity in approximately one hour. Thermal management has also been enhanced, allowing for longer recording times at high resolutions, though GoPro notes limitations at peak settings like 8K 60fps without airflow.
In terms of durability, the Mission 1 Pro is waterproof to 66 feet without housing and features a hydrophobic lens cover. It has also demonstrated significant shock resistance during testing. A notable omission compared to rivals like the DJI Osmo Action 6 is the lack of internal storage; users must rely on microSD cards. This is a significant drawback given the camera's premium price point.
The video quality in daylight is described as cinematic, benefiting from the larger sensor, sharp lens, 10-bit GP-Log2 setting, and a high 240Mbps data rate. This combination allows for accurate colors and soft, filmic grain that is easily adjustable in post-production. Low-light performance is also improved, with the larger sensor enabling higher ISO and faster shutter speeds, resulting in crisper footage in dim environments. However, the camera's subject tracking can occasionally falter in low light conditions. GoPro's Intelligent Capture modes, including "Dive" for underwater settings and "Low Light" for challenging conditions, aim to optimize footage automatically.
While GoPro's Hypersmooth stabilization is lauded for its gimbal-like smoothness, the Mission 1 Pro also includes features for photographers. It can capture 50MP RAW or JPEG images in good light, or 12MP images in low light for increased sensitivity. The camera is equipped with four microphones, including front stereo mics and a rear mic for vlogging, plus a bottom mic for wind noise reduction. It supports 32-bit float internal audio recording and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless microphones, while also offering wired mic support via USB-C.
