LG Denies Smart TV Recording Claims Amid User Privacy Concerns
LG has officially refuted claims that its smart TVs continuously record user conversations, even when off. The company clarified that voice processing only occurs when activated by a user.

LG Electronics has strongly denied allegations that its smart televisions continuously record and transmit user conversations, even when the devices are powered off or disconnected from the internet. The company issued a detailed statement to address a recent, lengthy report published by Gamers Nexus, which, in conjunction with Level1 Techs and independent cybersecurity researchers, claimed LG smart TVs could capture audio and sensitive user data without explicit activation.
The report, spanning over two hours, suggested that LG TVs might record audio even when in standby mode or unplugged, and could collect data such as IP addresses, geographic locations, and nearby Wi-Fi network details. These claims raised significant concerns about user privacy and data security among consumers.
In its comprehensive response, LG stated, "Our smart TVs do not continuously record or transmit user's conversations." The company elaborated that its speech-to-text processing capabilities are activated only when a user initiates a voice interaction, either through a designated wake-word feature or by pressing the voice command button on the remote control. Furthermore, LG clarified that voice data is not stored for later upload once a TV is disconnected from the network.
Privacy Features and Data Handling
LG also explained that certain features, including Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), voice recognition, and interest-based advertising, are optional. These features are not enabled by default, requiring explicit user consent to function. This was intended to reassure users that their data is not being collected without their knowledge or permission.
Regarding the potential for security vulnerabilities, a point also raised in the Gamers Nexus report, LG acknowledged that "no connected product is ever completely immune from security vulnerabilities." The company emphasized its commitment to ongoing monitoring, testing, and improvement throughout the product lifecycle to mitigate such risks. This proactive approach aims to maintain the security and integrity of its smart TV platform.
The Gamers Nexus report had highlighted potential business-to-business benefits of data collection alongside the risks of security exploits. LG's response directly addresses these points, assuring users that privacy and security are taken seriously. The company indicated that it is working continuously to identify and address any potential weaknesses, ensuring a safer user experience for millions of customers worldwide who rely on their LG smart TVs for entertainment and information.
