New durability tests from the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) indicate that the smaller Google Pixel 11 Pro smartphone may not withstand drops as well as other models in the Pixel 11 lineup. This comes despite Google's assertions of enhanced scratch resistance for the new Pixel 11 Pro series.

The EPREL regularly publishes ratings for new smartphones, evaluating factors such as battery capacity, lifespan, water and dust resistance, and repairability. A key component of its assessment is a "repeated free fall reliability test," which determines how many drops a device can endure before showing defects. For the Pixel 11 series, the results reveal a mixed performance.

While the Pixel 11 Pro XL, the Pixel 11 Fold, and the standard Pixel 11 model all achieved an "A" rating in the drop test, mirroring last year's performance, the base Pixel 11 Pro model fell short, earning only a "B" rating. The Pixel 11 itself managed an "A" rating with 270 drops, while the Pixel 11 Pro XL also received an "A" rating after enduring 270 drops. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold achieved a respectable "A" rating with 210 drops.

Durability Discrepancies Emerge

The distinction in durability is particularly noteworthy when compared to the previous generation. The Pixel 10 Pro, released last year, reportedly achieved an "A" rating and withstood 270 drops in the same EPREL test. This year's results for the base Pixel 11 Pro, with 180 drops and a "B" rating, raise questions about potential design changes or manufacturing variations.

It is possible that a testing anomaly occurred, or there might be subtle structural or material differences in the smaller Pixel 11 Pro that impact its resilience. Google has been emphasizing improved screen durability, with claims that the Pixel 11 Pro displays are more than twice as scratch-resistant. However, the EPREL data suggests that overall structural integrity during impacts may not have seen a uniform improvement across the entire range.

This news comes as the Pixel 11 series continues to roll out, with other notable features including trade-in values reaching up to $1,000 for older models and discussions around the functionality of the 'HiLight' display feature, which some observers feel missed an opportunity to serve as a perfect notification LED.

The EPREL's findings provide consumers with an additional data point when considering the longevity and robustness of their next smartphone purchase. While flagship phones often prioritize advanced features and camera technology, their ability to withstand the rigors of daily use remains a critical concern for many users. Further official statements from Google or additional testing from independent sources will be crucial in fully understanding the Pixel 11 Pro's real-world durability.
