Sony has unveiled its latest wearable air conditioner, the Reon Pocket Pro Plus, promising enhanced cooling capabilities and improved comfort for users. The new device, set to launch in the UK and Europe through Sony's official store and online retailers like Amazon, builds upon its predecessors' design and functionality. It aims to provide personal cooling through innovative technology, moving beyond simple personal fans.

The Reon Pocket Pro Plus operates using the Peltier effect, a thermoelectric phenomenon where an electric current creates a temperature difference. The device is worn at the base of the neck, featuring an electrically cooled metal plate that lowers temperature in a key area for circulation. This method effectively functions like a compact, portable ice pack, powered by a USB-C port.

Sony has spent nearly a decade refining this wearable cooling technology, progressively increasing battery capacity and enhancing the device's ergonomic design for greater wearability. The Pro Plus model represents a significant step forward, boasting a two-degree Celsius (3.6-degree Fahrenheit) increase in cooling power, which Sony states is a 20 percent improvement over previous versions. An advanced cooling algorithm has also been implemented, enabling more precise monitoring of temperature fluctuations both on the device itself and in the immediate surroundings.

Enhanced Cooling and Extended Use

Despite its increased power, the Reon Pocket Pro Plus is designed to maintain extended operational times. According to Sony, the device can run for up to 10 hours on its second-highest cooling setting. The comfort and stability of the unit have also been addressed, with new fins designed to secure the device to the neck and shoulders, reportedly making it 40 percent more stable than earlier models. While the cooling improvements are the most notable upgrade, real-world testing will be crucial to fully assess the latest model's performance. Sony has provided heat-map imagery to illustrate the enhanced and more sustained cooling effect of the new device.

The physical design of the Reon Pocket Pro Plus closely resembles its predecessor, the Reon Pocket Pro. It rests discreetly at the back of the neck, intended to be worn under clothing like a shirt or top. The vent fins have been made more adaptable to accommodate a wider variety of neck shapes, ensuring a better fit. A quiet internal fan aids in circulating air over the cooling plate, optimizing the cooling process. For safety, an automatic shutdown mechanism is in place to prevent the device from overheating.

Accompanying the Reon Pocket Pro Plus is a new accessory: the second-generation Pocket Tag. This tag is smaller than its predecessor and is equipped to monitor ambient temperature and humidity. Sony suggests that this data will help the Reon device more effectively fine-tune its cooling output. Users will also have access to a companion app for manual control and customization of settings. However, the device is designed to function independently without a smartphone, offering flexibility to users.

The development of wearable personal cooling devices like the Sony Reon Pocket Pro Plus highlights a growing trend in the consumer electronics market. As climate change leads to more extreme weather conditions and urban heat islands intensify, demand for personal climate control solutions is rising. While traditional air conditioning systems are effective for enclosed spaces, portable and wearable solutions offer mobility and immediate relief in various settings, from outdoor events to crowded public transport.
