Google's Gemini artificial intelligence assistant on Android has gained a significant new capability: direct integration with the Google Play Store. Unveiled during the I/O 2026 developer conference, this feature allows users to interact with Gemini conversationally to discover new Android applications and games, streamlining the search and acquisition process.

Users can now pose natural language queries to Gemini to find specific types of apps. For instance, prompts can range from seeking out meditation applications and recommending international travel map tools to finding apps that identify fish for scuba diving trips or those that can replicate a vintage 90s disposable camera aesthetic for photos. Productivity apps for meal planning are also within Gemini's new search scope.

When a query yields direct results, Gemini may display a Google Play Store card featuring app ratings, download counts, and a link to view more details on the Play Store. Tapping on an app listing will present an option to install it directly. For other types of searches, Gemini will offer a more traditional descriptive response, allowing users to then follow up with commands like "Install [app name]" or "Download [game name]" to generate the Play Store card.

Expanding Commerce and Personalization

Beyond app discovery, the Gemini-Google Play Store integration extends to in-app purchases and subscriptions. Users can leverage Gemini to search for and buy digital items, subscriptions, or digital gift cards within supported applications. This functionality, which builds upon the introduction of gift card support last year, enables purchases with commands such as "Purchase [in-app item] for [game name]" or "Buy [store name] gift card." Gemini is currently limited to recommending in-app items for applications already installed on the user's device, and while not all apps currently support this purchasing feature, Google indicates the list is expanding.

Setting up this integration involves initiating a relevant prompt within Gemini, which will then guide the user through connecting their Google Play Store account. The feature is currently in the process of rolling out to Android devices.

This new integration marks a significant step in how users interact with their mobile ecosystems. By merging the conversational power of AI with the vast catalog of the Google Play Store, Google aims to make app discovery and management more intuitive and efficient. This move also represents a deeper integration of AI services into core device functionalities, potentially setting a new standard for how users find and engage with software on their smartphones and tablets. The ability to search for and purchase in-app items directly through a conversational interface could further boost engagement with mobile applications and services.
