Instagram Lets Users Control Feed Algorithm: New 'Your Algorithm' Feature Launched
Instagram is rolling out a new 'Your Algorithm' feature, allowing users to directly influence the content shown in their main feed. This move aims to give users more control over their social media experience.

Instagram is introducing a significant new feature that grants users direct control over the algorithmic recommendations appearing in their main feed. Dubbed "Your Algorithm," the tool enables users to see and modify the topics the platform believes they are interested in, thereby shaping their overall Instagram experience. This expansion follows similar functionalities already released for the Reels and Explore sections of the app.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced the rollout on Wednesday, emphasizing that this is more than just a superficial update. "This is the start of something bigger than a feature," Mosseri stated. "I believe it’s in our best interest as a business to empower people to shape Instagram into something that works for them, and that people should be able to have a meaningful amount of agency over the products they spend so much time in." He indicated that future developments on the platform will be built upon this principle of user empowerment.
Mosseri acknowledged that while algorithmic recommendations represent a substantial technical achievement, they have come at a cost to user agency. He explained that the current system primarily learns from user interactions like taps, watches, and shares, without providing a direct channel for users to articulate their preferences. "The system learns from what you tap, watch, and share, but you don’t really get to tell it what you want," Mosseri said. "I think this is part of what people feel when they feel uneasy about social media — not the content itself, but the sense that the experience is happening to them rather than being shaped by them."
Shifting Towards User Agency
The introduction of "Your Algorithm" signals a strategic shift by Meta, Instagram's parent company, towards a more user-centric approach to content curation. For years, the underlying ranking models have often been opaque to users, leading to a feeling of passive consumption. Mosseri highlighted the role of advancements in artificial intelligence, specifically large language models (LLMs), in enabling this change. "Now, however, he says that LLMs can 'look at clusters of content and describe them in language people understand,' which gives Instagram 'a way to show people what the system thinks they’re interested in, and a way for them to tell the system what they actually want.'" This development is crucial for building trust and improving user satisfaction on the platform.
Initially, the "Your Algorithm" feature will focus on allowing users to adjust their topical interests. However, Instagram is actively developing support for more nuanced controls, including preferences for specific people, moods, content types, and even desired "vibes." This move is likely a response to growing user demand for greater personalization and control over digital environments. The ability to fine-tune algorithmic output could potentially reduce user frustration and increase engagement by ensuring that the content displayed is more relevant and appealing.
The implications of this change extend beyond mere user satisfaction. By giving users more power to shape their feeds, Instagram could foster a more positive and less addictive user experience. This contrasts with previous criticisms that social media algorithms are designed to maximize engagement, sometimes at the expense of user well-being. The emphasis on user agency suggests a recalibration of business priorities, prioritizing long-term user loyalty and a healthier relationship with its audience over short-term, engagement-driven metrics. The success of this feature will be closely watched as a potential blueprint for other platforms grappling with similar issues of user control and algorithmic transparency in 2026.
