Samsung One UI 9 Beta Arrives with Android 17 Features
Samsung has released the first beta for its One UI 9 software, based on Android 17. The update introduces refinements to the Quick Panel, Samsung Notes, and DeX, alongside new accessibility options.

Samsung is now distributing the initial beta version of its One UI 9 software, which integrates Android 17 for Galaxy devices. The accompanying changelog indicates a focus on iterative improvements rather than sweeping changes for this early release. While previous major updates like One UI 7 and One UI 8 introduced significant overhauls, One UI 9 appears to be taking a more measured approach.
The first beta is currently available in select international markets, including Germany, offering a preview of Samsung's official feature list for One UI 9. Key enhancements detailed include a more customizable Quick Panel, improved functionality within Samsung Notes and DeX, and various usability enhancements.
Refined User Experience and Accessibility Focus
The Quick Panel has been redesigned to offer greater user control, allowing for more extensive customization of its interactive elements. Users can now adjust the size of sliders for brightness and volume, modify the media player controls, and opt to detach the sound mode button from the main volume slider. This level of personalization aims to streamline common device interactions.
Samsung DeX, the company's desktop experience for mobile devices, also receives notable updates. Moving application windows between different desktop screens is simplified via a top menu. Additionally, desktop previews are now featured at the top of the Recents screen, facilitating quicker switching between active applications with a single tap.
For productivity, Samsung Notes introduces a new 'Tape' feature, enabling users to obscure portions of their notes, which can then be revealed on demand. A broader selection of new pen styles is also provided, expanding creative and annotation possibilities within the app.
Gamers will appreciate the expanded Game Booster panel, offering direct access to settings such as screen resolution and screenshot format without needing to interrupt gameplay. This integration aims to provide more dynamic control during gaming sessions.
Privacy and accessibility are also prominent themes in this beta release. A new blue indicator will appear at the top of the screen whenever an application accesses device location data, providing greater transparency. Tapping this indicator in the Quick Panel reveals which app is using the location information.
Samsung continues its collaboration with Google on accessibility features. The 'What's new' menu within Accessibility settings will highlight the latest options for users. Text spotlighting enhances readability by enlarging and highlighting selected text in a dedicated window, with customizable font sizes and colors.
Physical keyboard shortcuts are introduced for easier access to essential accessibility settings, reducing the need for direct screen interaction. Mouse keys functionality has been enhanced with new control options for speed and acceleration, and the numeric keypad can now be used for pointing and clicking. Furthermore, the 'Replace swipe with single tap' option has been relocated to the Dexterity and interaction menu for more convenient access.
Improvements to TalkBack, Samsung's screen reader, are also noted. Through ongoing collaboration with Google, TalkBack features are being unified, and updates can now be applied directly through the Google Play Store as a standard app update. The 'Select to speak' feature offers quick audio readouts of selected on-screen elements, such as text or images, without activating the full TalkBack functionality.
While this initial beta changelog might seem modest, Samsung typically launches its major foldable devices in July. The company is expected to officially introduce the One UI 9 update around that time, potentially with more features added before the final release. The current beta program is open for Galaxy S26 series devices, with plans to extend availability to other Galaxy models in the upcoming months.
