Unforgetful App Aims to Conquer Procrastination for iOS Users

Marco Arment, a notable indie developer known for apps like Overcast and Instapaper, has released his latest creation: Unforgetful. This new application, available for iOS and Mac, serves as an alternative to Apple’s native Reminders app, specifically targeting users who struggle with procrastination. Unforgetful integrates with existing Reminders databases but introduces features aimed at those who find Apple’s system insufficient for their needs.

Arment detailed his motivations for developing Unforgetful, citing dissatisfaction with Apple’s Reminders app. "Siri, for all of its faults, has always been very good at creating tasks in Apple’s Reminders app… The Reminders app, though, doesn’t fit me at all. I don’t like how it looks, how it works, or how it’s organized. Hell, I don’t even like its icon. There’s nothing about it I like. So I never open it," he stated. Specific pain points included the unpredictable behavior of the snooze function and the accidental dismissal of reminders, which would result in their complete loss.

The new app addresses these shortcomings by ensuring notifications repeat until a task is completed and deleted. This persistent alerting makes it significantly harder to overlook or lose track of important tasks, even for those prone to dismissing them without action. Snoozing functionality has also been enhanced, with intervals that adapt and extend based on repeated snoozes, providing a more graduated approach to deferring tasks. Crucially, Unforgetful is designed to avoid overwhelming users with too many simultaneous tasks, a common trigger for paralysis and inaction.

Advanced Functionality vs. Simplicity

Unlike more complex task management systems, Unforgetful maintains a streamlined interface, deliberately omitting advanced organizational tools such as tags, multiple views, or modes. Arment suggests that for users requiring such sophisticated features, Apple’s own Reminders app might still be a more suitable option. The core purpose of Unforgetful is to act as a robust safety net, ensuring users remain on top of their commitments, regardless of how tasks are entered—manually or via voice—or whether they have strict deadlines.

A significant advantage of Unforgetful is its seamless integration with the existing Apple Reminders ecosystem. Users can continue adding tasks through Siri as they normally would, without needing to specify that Unforgetful should be the active application. Once set up, users simply disable notifications from Apple’s Reminders and enable those from Unforgetful. This integration eliminates the need to manually export or import data if a user decides to switch back, as all reminders remain within the Apple database. This level of interoperability is a key differentiator among third-party reminder applications.

Beyond its core notification system, Unforgetful also provides an in-app microphone for creating voice reminders on the go. Furthermore, it offers a comprehensive suite of widgets designed for both the Lock Screen and Control Center, allowing for quick access and management of reminders without needing to open the full application. This focus on accessibility and persistent engagement aims to fundamentally alter the user’s relationship with their to-do list, making task completion more likely.
