ChatGPT Offers Unlimited Text Chats for Free Users with GPT-5.6 Luna
OpenAI is removing chat limits for free ChatGPT users and rolling out the new GPT-5.6 Luna model. Paid users also receive an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model and enhanced reasoning controls.

OpenAI has announced a significant upgrade to its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, removing usage limits for text-based conversations for all free users. This move comes as the platform recently surpassed 1 billion weekly active users. The enhanced experience will be powered by the new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which will now serve as the default for Free and Go tier subscribers, superseding the previous GPT-5.5 model. Additionally, both free tiers will gain access to a new "Think" button, enabling users to select a higher level of reasoning for tackling more complex queries.
While text chat limits are being lifted, OpenAI clarified that separate restrictions will remain in place for interactions involving files, images, voice input, and image generation. The update also introduces benefits for paid subscribers on the Plus and Pro plans. These users will now utilize an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, specifically engineered for rapid task completion such as quick questions, web research, and advisory functions. The company stated this new model is designed to provide more concise and robust responses compared to its predecessors. It's important to note that this GPT-5.6 Sol variant is distinct from the version used for Codex and Work, which remains unchanged.
Enhanced Reasoning and Performance Metrics
Paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will also benefit from a new "thinking slider." This feature allows users to fine-tune the model's processing intensity based on the complexity and multi-step nature of their queries, offering a more customized AI interaction. According to internal evaluations shared by OpenAI, the new models demonstrate marked improvements in accuracy. Compared to GPT-5.5-Instant, factual errors were reportedly 62% less frequent with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less frequent with GPT-5.6 Sol. The updated GPT-5.6 Sol model is available to Plus and Pro users immediately, while the broader changes for Free and Go users are rolling out throughout the current week. Full access to unlimited text chats and the new "Think" button for advanced questions is expected next week.
This significant expansion of capabilities for free users could dramatically increase engagement and accessibility to advanced AI tools. By removing chat limitations, OpenAI is democratizing access to powerful language models, potentially fostering wider adoption for tasks ranging from educational support to creative writing assistance. The introduction of tiered reasoning options, especially the "Think" button and the thinking slider, also provides users with greater control over the AI's output, allowing them to balance speed with depth of analysis. These advancements highlight OpenAI's continued commitment to refining its artificial intelligence offerings and making them more practical and versatile for a global user base.
