Pain-Free Tattoo Patches Could Arrive by Mail
A London-based biotech firm has developed "Microdot" patches using microscopic needles to deposit ink for permanent tattoos without pain. The technology could soon be available for at-home application.

A revolutionary new method for permanent body art has emerged from London, promising a virtually painless experience using disposable "Microdot" patches. CipherX, a local biotech company, has pioneered this technology, which sidesteps the traditional tattoo gun for microscopic, biodegradable needles that deposit ink into the skin's upper layers. The process, designed for speed and comfort, could significantly broaden the appeal of permanent tattoos for individuals hesitant about needles and pain.
During a demonstration, the application process proved remarkably swift. After selecting a design – a small sparkle graphic – a guide disc was placed on the arm, followed by an applicator. With a press of a button, the applicator embedded approximately 112 microneedles, securing a patch that adheres to the skin. A flexible bandage followed, with an additional branded sticker for what appeared to be marketing purposes. The entire procedure, from application to the patch settling, took around 15 minutes, with the user able to move freely during this time. The sensation was described as barely noticeable, akin to a light touch, far from the discomfort or pain associated with conventional tattooing. Notably, even individuals with sensitive skin reported no bleeding or irritation.
The Science Behind the Microdots
Unlike traditional tattoos that require significant healing and can involve scabbing, the Microdot patches offer a seemingly immediate result. The tattoo gradually darkens over approximately two days. While the initial application may show dots, the ink is designed to meld together over time, mimicking the natural aging of permanent ink. CipherX CEO Ferdinand Kohle highlighted the technology's departure from older microneedle concepts, positioning Microdot as the first consumer-ready product in this space. While similar microneedle technology has been explored since at least 2022, CipherX appears to be the first to bring it to market as a user-friendly alternative.
The current limitations of the technology include a selection of about 15 black-only designs, none exceeding 15mm in diameter. However, the company is actively expanding its offerings, with plans for additional colors, including UV-reactive ink, and larger design options. Future collaborations with established artists are also in the works to broaden the aesthetic appeal. While not catering to those who prefer large, custom, or colorful pieces, the Microdot tattoo presents an accessible option for individuals seeking subtle, permanent body art or for those who have previously avoided tattooing due to pain concerns.
Looking ahead, CipherX is developing kits for self-application at home, envisioning a future where these tattoo patches can be conveniently mailed to consumers. This innovation could further democratize permanent body art. The company is currently conducting tattoos through trained practitioners at approved pop-up locations in London, with strict age verification in place. While the long-term permanence is still under observation, the initial £50 (approximately $66) price point positions it competitively with similarly sized traditional tattoos, offering a compelling value for a pain-free application.
