Apple Foldable iPhone Ultra Rumored for Two Colors

Apple's first foldable smartphone, rumored to be called the "iPhone Ultra," is reportedly launching with a minimalist color palette, potentially limited to just two shades and deliberately avoiding bolder hues. This limited offering aligns with early reports from leakers and supply chain sources, suggesting a strategic approach for the device's debut.

The initial color speculation began in February with a Weibo leaker known as "Instant Digital," who indicated only two color options would be available, with white being the sole confirmed shade at the time. This leaker recently reiterated their report, maintaining the two-color projection. Further details emerged from a supply chain source cited by Macworld, suggesting a classic silver and white model, alongside an indigo option described as comparable to the iPhone 17 Pro's Deep Blue finish. This same source indicated that the foldable iPhone would feature fewer choices than the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, with a distinct lack of bright or vivid colors.

Production Challenges May Limit Color Options

This restrained approach to color selection echoes Apple's strategy with the iPhone X, which launched in 2017 with only Silver and Space Gray options. The iPhone X was a revolutionary device that introduced a new design language for the company. Apple later expanded the iPhone XS lineup to include Gold the following year, hinting at a similar incremental approach for the "iPhone Ultra" over time.

The limited color offering might also be a practical response to the anticipated production constraints. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously warned that early manufacturing yields and ramp-up difficulties could delay widespread shipments until 2027, with potential shortages persisting through at least the end of 2026. Kuo also clarified that the widely reported order figure of 15 to 20 million foldable iPhones likely represents cumulative demand over the product's entire two-to-three-year lifecycle, rather than annual sales for 2026 alone. This suggests that initial annual volumes are expected to be modest.

Developing and manufacturing additional color variants introduces complexity and cost to an already intricate production process, along with additional stock-keeping units (SKUs). Given that the device is expected to face supply limitations at launch regardless, there is minimal commercial incentive for Apple to diversify the initial color palette. Furthermore, with the "iPhone Ultra" anticipated to command a starting price that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests will exceed $2,000, the target consumer may be less influenced by a wider array of color choices, simplifying Apple's decision-making.

The "iPhone Ultra" is projected to be unveiled in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, marking Apple's entry into the foldable smartphones market.
