iPhone 18 Standard Model Delayed to 2027, Apple Splits Launch

Apple is set to alter its long-standing iPhone release schedule, with the standard iPhone 18 model now slated for a first-quarter 2027 debut, according to indirect confirmation from supplier Pegatron. The Cupertino tech giant is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new foldable "iPhone Ultra" this September. This strategic division of the iPhone 18 series launch represents a notable departure from Apple's tradition of introducing all main iPhone models simultaneously each September.

The shift was hinted at during Pegatron's second-quarter 2026 earnings call, where the company, a key Apple manufacturing partner, indicated that one of its major customers would adjust its typical smartphone shipment timeline. Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported on the call, highlighting the potential delay for the base model iPhone 18. Historically, from the iPhone 11 through the iPhone 17, all primary models have launched together in the fall. The new plan pushes the standard iPhone 18's availability to around March 2027, with a lower-end iPhone 18e and an iPhone Air 2 also expected around the same time.

Apple Diversifies iPhone 18 Lineup and Release Cadence

This staggered release strategy has been a subject of speculation within the tech community for some time. Prominent Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and former The Information reporter Wayne Ma have previously reported on rumors suggesting a divided launch. Earlier this year, another Apple supplier, Largan Precision, which manufactures camera lenses, also indirectly alluded to changes in the supply chain that could align with this new release pattern.

The full slate of six new iPhone models expected by the end of March 2027 includes: the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, both slated for September 2026; the innovative iPhone Ultra, also expected in September 2026; followed by the standard iPhone 18, the budget-friendly iPhone 18e, and the updated iPhone Air 2, all scheduled for March 2027. This approach allows Apple to potentially manage its supply chain more effectively and perhaps generate sustained consumer interest throughout the fiscal year, rather than concentrating it into a single launch period.

The decision to split the launch could also be an attempt to differentiate the premium models from the standard ones more clearly, potentially driving higher average selling prices. The Pro and Ultra models are expected to feature advanced capabilities, including the latest in camera technology and display innovation, distinguishing them from the more mainstream iPhone 18 and its variants.
