The highly anticipated arrival of Call of Duty on a Nintendo console, specifically the upcoming Switch 2, has hit a snag with early testers reporting significant visual and performance issues. While a 10-year agreement between Microsoft and Nintendo promised Activision's flagship franchise for Nintendo platforms, the initial hands-on impressions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 suggest the port has made substantial compromises, prioritizing frame rate over graphical fidelity.

Content creators like Spawn Wave and Nintendo World Report were among the first to experience the Switch 2 version ahead of its public beta. Their collective feedback indicates that the game largely achieves its target of 60 frames per second in docked mode, a feat for the hardware. However, this performance comes at a steep cost to visual clarity. Testers described heavy artifacting, particularly around character models, weapons, and environmental details, which became more pronounced during intense action or rapid camera movements. John Rairden of Nintendo World Report noted that an Activision representative confirmed the use of the console's integrated DLSS implementation, but expressed astonishment at its poor visual output, stating, "I've never seen a DLSS implementation that looks this bad." This visual downgrade appears to be more aggressive than what has been observed in other third-party titles for the Switch 2.

Performance Trade-offs and Handheld Mode

The visual compromises are reportedly less noticeable in handheld mode, where the smaller screen size masks some of the resolution shortcomings. Some creators even reported a smoother frame rate in handheld, possibly due to the Switch 2's variable refresh rate capabilities. Despite this, aiming precision with the standard Joy-Cons was flagged as a genuine handicap for a fast-paced shooter like Call of Duty, with a recommendation made for the Pro Controller even for tabletop play. For those preferring mouse and keyboard input, Jordan Rudek of Nintendo World Report found the experience "really quite good" thanks to the stable frame rate, but struggled with identifying distant enemies against the cluttered backgrounds due to the reduced resolution, a particular hindrance for sniping.

The introduction of Call of Duty to the Nintendo Switch 2 is a direct result of the landmark 10-year deal inked by Microsoft and Nintendo in February 2023. This agreement aimed to secure Call of Duty's presence on Nintendo consoles following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The deal signifies a major shift in platform availability for one of the world's most popular video game franchises, potentially broadening its player base significantly. However, the current state of the Switch 2 port raises questions about the feasibility of delivering a high-quality experience on the platform without sacrificing core gameplay elements.

Despite the visual criticisms, early impressions have largely been positive regarding the game's stability. Yet, a significant concern remains about the implications for cross-play. The reduced resolution and less detailed character models on the Switch 2 version could place its players at a distinct competitive disadvantage against those on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, who benefit from higher frame rate ceilings and superior visual clarity. Developers will need to carefully consider how to balance the experience to ensure fair competition across all platforms when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on October 23, 2026. The developers might also consider adding a toggle for resolution or graphical quality, allowing players to choose between sharper visuals or smoother performance, a feature common on other consoles.
