iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Key Upgrades Detailed

Apple officially unveiled the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Friday, September 11, 2026, showcasing a suite of targeted enhancements over the previous generation. While the overall design and display sizes remain consistent, the latest models introduce substantial improvements in processing power, camera technology, battery endurance, and charging speeds.

The iPhone 18 Pro and its larger counterpart, the Pro Max, will continue to feature 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively, maintaining a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. The 48-megapixel Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras, offering 4x optical-quality zoom, are also carried over. Notably, the MagSafe and Qi2 charging speeds are unchanged, still capped at 25W. The industrial design, aside from a refined Dynamic Island, remains largely familiar.

Camera and Performance Enhancements

The most significant overhaul is seen in the Main camera system, which now boasts a new variable-aperture capability. This allows for aperture settings of ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4, a considerable leap from the fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture on the iPhone 17 Pro. This new system promises approximately 50% better performance in low-light conditions. Users will also benefit from new manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram, offering greater creative flexibility. Apple is also introducing a new Apple Reference Image feature, designed for creating authenticated, unalterable reference photos, alongside Photographic Styles 3 with enhanced texture and grain controls. Video capabilities have also been bolstered, with Cinematic mode now supporting 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps, up from 30 fps, and Cinematic effects are applicable post-capture for footage shot up to 60 fps. Time-lapse recording has been upgraded to 4K Dolby Vision, and video recording in low light at 1080p has seen improvements.

Under the hood, the new A20 Pro chip replaces the A19 Pro, delivering up to 20% faster CPU performance and a 40% boost in GPU speed thanks to a new 7-core GPU, up from the previous 6-core setup. The Neural Engine has been doubled in AI processing capability with a new dual 16-core configuration. To manage this increased power, Apple has implemented a redesigned vapor chamber with three times the surface area, contributing to up to 40% better sustained performance during demanding tasks.

The Dynamic Island has also been made more compact, allowing it to display up to three Live Activities simultaneously, a useful enhancement for multitasking. For photographers and videographers, new smart focus tracking has been integrated for both stills and video, alongside an improved Audio Mix feature that offers higher-quality voice processing and music isolation.

Battery life sees an increase, with the iPhone 18 Pro now rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, up from 33 hours on the iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback, an increase from 39 hours. Wired charging is also faster, with Apple reporting 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes, down from around 20 minutes on older models.

Storage options have been expanded, with the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro now offering a 2TB storage variant, a first for the smaller Pro model, which previously maxed out at 1TB. The new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available in new finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy, replacing last year's Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue. The new models are slightly heavier, with the iPhone 18 Pro gaining 5g and the iPhone 18 Pro Max adding 16g.

Reflecting these upgrades, Apple has increased the starting price for both models by $100. The iPhone 18 Pro will begin at $1,199, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Pre-orders for the devices are set to open on Saturday, September 12, 2026, with the official release scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2026.
