Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has publicly apologized for the upcoming price increase on the new Switch 2 console, acknowledging the potential impact on consumers. The company plans to raise the console's price globally, with a notable $50 increase expected in the United States. These price adjustments are slated to take effect primarily in September, though some regions, like Japan, will see the changes as early as this month.

Speaking at a financial results briefing, Furukawa stated Nintendo's commitment to enhancing the value for Switch 2 owners. "We will prepare a robust software lineup to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value. We will work diligently to overcome this barrier," he announced. He further expressed regret for the inconvenience, saying, "We sincerely apologize to our customers for the considerable inconvenience and trouble this will cause. While we wanted to prioritize a wide adoption, it was challenging to bear the rising costs over a long period. The [new] pricing does not fully account for all cost increases."

Balancing Costs and Consumer Adoption

The decision to increase prices comes amid persistent rising costs within the manufacturing and supply chain sectors. Nintendo indicated that the new pricing structure does not fully cover all the escalated expenses, suggesting a strategic move to absorb some of the impact rather than passing it entirely onto consumers. This approach aims to mitigate the immediate shock of the price hike and encourage continued adoption of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Furukawa also addressed the company's second-year sales forecast for the Switch 2, which is projected to be lower than the first year. He attributed this projection to exceptionally strong initial sales driven by significant efforts to bolster the company's supply chain. "Due to efforts to strengthen our supply supply chain, the 1st year sales reached an unprecedented level. The demand in the 2nd year is firm, and we believe that the adoption of Switch 2 is progressing smoothly," he explained. This indicates confidence in the console's long-term appeal despite the adjusted pricing strategy.

The global price adjustments extend to various Nintendo products and services. In Japan, for instance, the price increase will also affect Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions, adding another layer to the company's revised pricing strategy across its ecosystem. The company is likely hoping that a compelling lineup of exclusive titles and continued innovation will offset consumer concerns regarding the higher entry cost for the console.
