Apple is integrating artificial intelligence into its popular Shortcuts app, fundamentally changing how users create automations and workflows on iOS 27. Unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, the updated Shortcuts app will now allow individuals to describe their desired tasks in plain English, with AI translating these natural language prompts into functional automations. This significant shift aims to make the powerful tool accessible to a broader audience beyond its traditional base of tech-savvy power users.

Previously, building custom shortcuts required a more technical understanding of app actions, variables, and system-level commands. The new AI-driven approach, powered by what Apple is calling Apple Intelligence, interprets user requests and automatically constructs the necessary steps. Celcia Dantas, Sr. Manager of Home Software Product Marketing, acknowledged the complexity of the previous system during the WWDC keynote on Monday. "While super powerful, the process of creating these shortcuts can feel, well, complicated," Dantas said.

Making Automation Accessible with AI

This AI enhancement democratizes the automation process. Users will no longer need to spend time searching for specific app actions or understanding intricate variable logic. For example, a user wanting to automate a notification to their partner when leaving work, complete with an estimated time of arrival (ETA), can now simply describe this need. Shortcuts, using Apple Intelligence, will then identify the required system functions: detecting when the user leaves a saved work location, calculating the travel time via Apple Maps, and sending the ETA through Messages. This eliminates the manual configuration previously required for such tasks.

The ability to modify automations also becomes more intuitive. If a user decides they want to listen to a podcast upon leaving work, they can simply describe this edit, and the shortcut will be updated accordingly. This level of dynamic adjustment was previously difficult to achieve without re-engineering the entire workflow. The revamped Shortcuts app is slated to be released with iOS 27 later this fall, promising a more seamless and intelligent experience for millions of iPhone and iPad users.

The integration of Apple Intelligence into core applications like Shortcuts signifies a broader strategy by the company to embed AI capabilities across its ecosystem. This move is seen as a direct response to increasing competition in the AI space and a move to enhance user engagement by providing more personalized and efficient tools. The focus on natural language interfaces for complex tasks is a key trend in modern software development, aiming to reduce the barrier to entry for sophisticated functionalities. By leveraging its own AI, Apple seeks to differentiate its user experience and solidify its position in the evolving tech landscape.
