ChatGPT Mac App Unveils Computer History to Recall User Activity

OpenAI has introduced a significant upgrade to its ChatGPT desktop application for macOS, rolling out a new feature called "Computer History." This opt-in tool aims to enhance the AI's ability to learn from and remember user interactions, extending its memory beyond the application itself to encompass activity across various apps and websites on the Mac. This functionality is presented as a successor to the experimental "Chronicle" research preview.

The "Computer History" feature works by constructing a searchable timeline based on user activity. Unlike its predecessor, which relied on screenshots, the new system captures interaction events exposed through macOS accessibility features. These include details such as clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and application switching. OpenAI announced the feature in the changelog for its desktop app on Thursday. Importantly, the feature is not enabled by default, requiring explicit user consent and configuration regarding which applications and websites contribute to the history. This approach places control firmly in the hands of the user.

User Control and Privacy Safeguards

OpenAI emphasizes that "Computer History" is designed with user privacy and control at its core. The feature is available to users with ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscriptions. For Business and Enterprise workspaces, administrators must first enable access before individual members can opt in. Initial availability excludes users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Users can leverage "Computer History" for various practical purposes. For instance, they can ask the AI to recall what they were doing before a break, locate a recently accessed document, or generate a summary of their day's work. Furthermore, ChatGPT may proactively suggest turning frequently repeated workflows into custom skills or automations, streamlining user productivity.

OpenAI has detailed specific privacy measures: "Computer History" does not capture screenshots, screen recordings, microphone input, or system audio. Private browsing activity is also explicitly excluded from collection. Users can manage their history through the application's settings. They can inspect individual timeline entries, locate associated memory files in Finder, delete specific items, or clear activity logs for custom periods, ranging from the last 10 minutes to all time. The interaction events are temporarily stored on the Mac for a maximum of 48 hours before being processed on OpenAI's servers to generate memories. According to the company, these events are not retained after processing and are not used for training AI models. The resulting plain-text memory files are stored locally until the user chooses to delete them.

However, OpenAI also issues a warning regarding potential security implications. The company notes that "Computer History" could increase the risk of prompt-injection attacks from malicious content embedded within apps or websites. To mitigate this, users are advised to pause history collection when engaging in sensitive communications or when interacting with applications containing confidential information. This proactive approach aims to balance enhanced AI functionality with robust user security and data protection.
