Google Favored Sources Button Aims to Boost Publisher Traffic Amid AI Changes

Google announced Thursday it is providing online publishers with a new interactive tool, the "Preferred Sources" button, designed to help combat traffic losses exacerbated by the rise of artificial intelligence. The button allows website visitors to designate a publisher as a "favorite source," signaling to Google Search, Discover, and Google News that this content should be prioritized in user feeds and search results.

The feature, now available for embedding on publisher websites, expands on Google's earlier rollout of Preferred Sources within its AI experiences, such as AI Mode and AI Overviews, beginning in May 2026. This move aims to make it simpler for readers to locate and engage with trusted sources amid the evolving digital information landscape. According to Google, user selections of preferred sources had already surpassed 345,000 unique sites by May.

To become a preferred source, users can navigate to Google's source preferences page and search for a specific publisher. Google asserts that identifying a site as preferred can significantly increase traffic, with studies indicating users are twice as likely to click through to a favored source when it is presented to them. This initiative appears to be an effort by the search giant to mitigate the impact of AI-driven search features on businesses that rely heavily on website traffic for revenue.

Personalization Tools Expand Across Google Platforms

In addition to the Preferred Sources button, Google is enhancing user control over content discovery. Readers will soon be able to personalize their Discover feed within the Google app using natural language commands. By tapping a three-dot menu within the feed, users can specify topics they wish to see more or less of, enabling Google to refine recommendations in real-time. This user-centric approach to content curation mirrors similar features recently introduced by major social media platforms, which have also launched algorithm controls for their users.

Android users will also benefit from expanded customization options within the Google News app, including the ability to tailor their daily audio briefings. These updates underscore Google's commitment to providing users with more agency over the information they consume, a critical consideration as AI continues to reshape how content is discovered and delivered online. The company's strategy involves adapting its core products to ensure the continued visibility and viability of reputable publishers in an increasingly AI-influenced ecosystem.
