Plex Lifetime Pass Price Soars 300% After User Survey
A recent survey revealed the surprising popularity of Plex's Lifetime Pass, which is now set to increase by 300% to $749.99. The move follows other recent price hikes for the media server software.

Media server software provider Plex is dramatically increasing the price of its Lifetime Plex Pass, raising it by 300% to $749.99 starting July 1. This significant price adjustment follows recent hikes to its Remote Watch Pass and other Plex Pass tiers throughout 2025. The company's decision comes as a recent survey conducted by Android Authority revealed a strong user preference for the one-time purchase option.
The survey, which garnered nearly 5,000 votes, found that a striking 79.7% of respondents not only pay for Plex but also possess a Lifetime Plex Pass. This indicates a substantial segment of the user base willing to commit to a higher upfront cost for perpetual access to the platform's features. While many of these users likely secured their passes at a considerably lower price point than the current $249.99 (before the latest increase), the 300% surge is expected to reshape future adoption of this payment model.
In contrast, only 6% of survey participants opt for monthly or annual subscriptions for Plex. A further 14% indicated they use Plex but would "never pay" for the service, while a mere 1.5% subscribe to the Remote Watch Pass and 4.4% use the standard Plex Pass, highlighting the dominance of the lifetime option among engaged users.
Shift in Subscription Strategy
The substantial increase in the Lifetime Plex Pass price may signal a strategic shift by Plex, potentially making its subscription tiers appear more attractive to new users. Previously, the lifetime pass was often viewed as a cost-effective solution for long-term users, especially when purchased during promotional periods. For instance, one reader recalled acquiring a lifetime pass for just $75 during a Black Friday sale around 2015 or 2016.
However, the new pricing structure could alienate potential customers who were considering investing in the Plex ecosystem. User reactions to the initial price hike announcements have been largely negative. Many long-time users expressed dismay, feeling that the company is neglecting its original customer base. Comments on forums suggest a growing sentiment that Plex has lost its way, with some users considering open-source alternatives like Jellyfin. One user, jimmiller96, stated, "I think this is the end of Plex. They have forgotten their customers who have been there from the beginning." Another reader, herranton, echoed this sentiment, advising, "Lol. I guess jellyfin it is. This is how you kill your business."
The elevated price for new Lifetime Plex Pass buyers means that anyone planning to build a new home server or integrate Plex into their existing setup must now factor in this significant expenditure. The affordability that once characterized the lifetime option is effectively disappearing for new entrants. This decision by Plex will undoubtedly influence how consumers approach media server solutions in the coming months.
