SpaceX's satellite internet service, Starlink, has begun charging customers a $10 monthly fee for its hardware, a significant departure from its previous model of one-time hardware sales. New residential service sign-ups now display an upfront hardware cost of $0, accompanied by a recurring $10 monthly kit fee, a strategy familiar to users of traditional cable and telecom providers. The Starlink kit includes the essential satellite terminal and a home Wi-Fi router.

This new rental charge is in addition to recent increases in Starlink's monthly internet service prices, which rose by $5 to $10. Current internet plans range from $55 per month for 100Mbps download speeds, to $85 for 200Mbps, and a top-tier "Max" plan reaching up to 400Mbps for $130. For those seeking a professional setup, Starlink offers installation for a one-time fee of $199, though this charge is waived for subscribers to the Max plan.

According to a Starlink support article, the hardware rental option is currently available in select countries and is exclusively for Residential service plans. Customers opting to rent their Starlink hardware will be unable to pause their internet service. This change appears to be rolling out globally, with reports of the new fee appearing on Starlink's website for new customers in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Australia, and Mexico, as noted by PCMag.

Evolution of Starlink Hardware Pricing

Starlink's hardware pricing has undergone numerous changes since its launch in 2020. Initially, the company charged a substantial $499 for the hardware. This price saw increases, reaching $599 in 2022, before being adjusted in 2024 to regional pricing of either $499 or $299, depending on local network congestion. In a notable promotion last year, Starlink offered the satellite dish and router for free to customers in certain US regions and internationally, provided they committed to a 12-month subscription. However, plans bundled with free hardware were priced at $120 per month, compared to $90 per month for plans requiring a $349 hardware purchase. More recently, other offers have also included free hardware in some areas.

The company's history of fluctuating prices, region-specific promotions, and limited-time discounts makes it difficult to predict the longevity of the current $10 monthly rental fee. This strategy may be part of an effort by SpaceX, Starlink's parent company, to optimize revenue as it prepares for a public offering. The Starlink division has become a significant contributor to SpaceX's finances, generating $3.26 billion of the company's total revenue of $4.69 billion in the first quarter of 2026.

PCMag also points out that, from a long-term financial perspective, renting may not be the most economical choice. Over three years, the $10 monthly fee amounts to $360, whereas the standard dish can be purchased from retailers like Best Buy and Walmart for around $349. These retail prices have even seen discounts, dropping to $199 or as low as $89. Existing Starlink customers who wish to buy their rented equipment can initiate the process by creating a support ticket. Furthermore, new customers can bypass the rental fee altogether if they already possess a Starlink kit by entering the device identifier during the online checkout process, avoiding the monthly charge and potentially saving money over the long run.
