On August 12, 2026, a spectacular celestial event will unfold as the moon casts its shadow across Earth, creating a total solar eclipse. The shadow will begin its journey across the Arctic at 15:34 GMT, sweeping over Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. For a duration of up to two minutes and 18 seconds, the sun will be completely obscured in certain locations. This upcoming eclipse marks the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, with an estimated 15 million people, primarily in Spain, situated within the path of totality. A partial view of the eclipse will extend across much of Western Europe, portions of Northwestern Africa, and a small segment of the United States, offering a glimpse to approximately 980 million people worldwide.

The phenomenon occurs when one celestial body moves into the shadow of another. In the case of a solar eclipse, the moon positions itself between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun's light. Eclipses can manifest in four ways: partial, annular, total, and hybrid. A partial eclipse occurs when the moon only grazes the sun's edge. A total eclipse, the most dramatic, happens when the moon entirely covers the sun, transforming daylight into a twilight-like dusk and revealing the sun's outer atmosphere, known as the corona. Annular eclipses take place when the moon is too distant to completely obscure the sun, leaving a bright ring. Hybrid eclipses are the rarest, transitioning between total and annular phases along their path. The remarkable coincidence of the sun being about 400 times wider than the moon and situated roughly 400 times farther away makes total solar eclipses possible, as their apparent sizes from Earth are nearly identical.

European Path of Totality

The core of the August 12 total solar eclipse will traverse Spain, Iceland, and parts of Greenland, Russia, and Portugal. An estimated 15 million individuals will find themselves within this zone of complete solar coverage. Spain, particularly its northern and eastern regions, is poised for prime viewing. Cities such as Leon, Valladolid, Zaragoza, Teruel, and Valencia lie directly in the path of totality. Totality is expected to commence around 18:27 GMT in western Spain, which corresponds to 8:27 p.m. local time, and its duration will extend up to 110 seconds depending on the precise vantage point. While major cities like Madrid and Barcelona will not experience full totality, residents and visitors will still witness an impressive obscuration of over 99 percent of the sun.

Beyond the path of totality, a partial solar eclipse will be observable across a much broader geographical area. Most of Europe will experience a significant partial eclipse in the evening hours, with the sun setting while still partially obscured. Paris is projected to see about 92 percent of the sun covered, followed by London at 91 percent, and Berlin at 85 percent. Further east in Europe, the sunset may occur before the eclipse reaches its peak, diminishing the observable spectacle. Similar conditions apply to North Africa; Algiers is anticipated to see 98 percent coverage, and Casablanca 87 percent, with sunset potentially interrupting the view. In North America, the eclipse occurs during daylight hours, but the continent is too far from the main event for totality. Northeastern Canada's St. John's can expect around 53 percent coverage, diminishing to 18 percent in Montreal and 8 percent in Toronto. For the United States, parts of Alaska will see the most substantial eclipse at approximately 37 percent, while the contiguous U.S. will experience a more modest partial eclipse, ranging from about 28 percent in Maine to 10 percent in New York. For those who miss this event, the next total solar eclipse is scheduled for August 2, 2027, and will cross southern Spain, North Africa, and Yemen.
