The European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully launched two new Earth-observing satellites, FLEX and Sentinel-3C, into orbit. The pair lifted off on a Vega C rocket from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on September 15, 2026. This dual launch marks a significant step forward in ESA's ongoing efforts to monitor and understand critical environmental changes on our planet.

The FLEX (FLuorescence Explorer) satellite is designed to measure vegetation fluorescence, providing crucial data on plant health and photosynthesis. This information is vital for understanding crop yields, forest health, and the overall impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems. Sentinel-3C, on the other hand, will complement the existing Sentinel-3 constellation, focusing on oceanographic and atmospheric measurements. Monitoring Earth's Vital Signs

The launch represents a key milestone for ESA's Copernicus program, the world's largest Earth observation program, which provides vital data to a wide range of environmental services.
