Pixel Watch 5: Google Boosts Storage, Battery, Adds Gemini AI

Google officially unveiled its latest smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 5, on August 12, 2026, at its anticipated Pixel launch event. The new wearable boasts doubled internal storage, enhanced battery life, and the incorporation of Gemini AI, promising a more intelligent and longer-lasting user experience. Pre-orders for the device have opened, with the watch launching alongside the new Pixel 11 smartphone series.

The design of the Pixel Watch 5 largely retains the familiar aesthetic of its predecessors, featuring a subtly flattened dome that has become a signature of the line. Google is offering the device in two standard sizes, 41mm and 45mm, both featuring aluminum watch cases and coming bundled with a second-generation Active band. Color options for the 41mm model include Matte Black, Polished Silver, Satin Pyrite, and Champagne Gold, each paired with a corresponding Active band. The 45mm model shares similar colorways, excluding Champagne Gold.

Adding a unique option, Google has partnered with NBA star Stephen Curry for a special edition 45mm LTE model. This exclusive version comes in a Satin Pyrite aluminum case and features a distinct Rye Performance Loop Band, designed for comfort and breathability. Beyond the included Active band, users will have access to a wide array of band styles, such as Active Sport, Woven, Gradient Stretch, Metal Mesh, Metal Links, Metal Slim, and the Performance Loop, allowing for extensive personalization.

Enhanced Features and Performance

Under the hood, the Pixel Watch 5 carries over several key specifications from the previous generation, including a 60Hz AMOLED LTPO display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, offering up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. Both models are equipped with an IP68 water resistance rating, NFC, and GPS. The integration of Gemini AI is a significant upgrade, enabling advanced features such as generative watch faces, which can create unique watch face designs based on user prompts or data.

The new smartwatch also introduces health monitoring advancements. These include features for tracking blood pressure trends and an "Emergency SOS" functionality, which can automatically detect falls or breathing irregularities, initiating a call for help if needed. These capabilities leverage an array of sensors, including multi-path optical heart rate sensors, electrical sensors for ECG and skin conductance (cEDA) measurements, and a skin temperature sensor. Google highlighted that these health features are designed to provide users with deeper insights into their well-being.

Battery life sees a considerable improvement. The 45mm model is equipped with a 465 mAh battery, offering up to 40 hours with the always-on display active and up to 72 hours in Battery Saver mode. The 41mm model features a 332 mAh battery, providing up to 30 hours with the always-on display and up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode. Both models support fast charging, capable of reaching 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes.

The Pixel Watch 5 runs on Wear OS 7.0 and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 processor coupled with an Accelerated Cortex-M55 co-processor. Storage has been doubled from previous models to 64GB, providing ample space for apps, music, and data. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, and NFC. Certain regions will also benefit from Ultra-Wideband technology and Satellite SOS communication.

Google aims to solidify its position in the competitive smartwatch market with the Pixel Watch 5, directly challenging established players like Apple and Samsung. The enhanced feature set, particularly the AI integration and improved battery performance, addresses key user demands and positions the device as a compelling option for Android users seeking a premium wearable experience. The pricing starts at $399 for the 41mm Wi-Fi model, $429 for the 45mm Wi-Fi model, and $579 for the Stephen Curry special edition LTE model, reflecting its premium offering in the smartwatch landscape.
