Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 continues to surge as the title is two weeks away from launch, nearing eight million pre-ordered units according to tracking data. Recent reports indicate that the upcoming release has generated an estimated $751 million in gross revenue from pre-orders alone.

Data from Sensor Tower reveals that the PlayStation 5 edition dominates early purchases, accounting for 74% of pre-orders and yielding $559 million. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X|S version represents 26% of sales, totaling $192 million. Earlier in the release window during July, Newzoo estimated global pre-order revenue at $260 million and projected a 17.5% year-over-year increase in full game spending.

Pre-Order Trends and Edition Breakdown

Consumer preferences heavily favor premium editions of the software. Figures from August showed that 89% of tracked pre-orders went toward the $100 Ultimate Edition, while the remaining 11% chose the $80 Standard Edition.

“If we used any 'normal' preorder trajectories, the current four million preorders will be 40 million+ at launch,” Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, told GamesIndustry.biz regarding earlier projections. He added that actual figures might land around 25 million, which would equate to roughly $2 billion in sales before launch.

Additional analysis indicates that pre-orders are tracking 148% ahead of 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 during a comparable pre-launch window, though digital tracking does not factor in boxed physical releases.
