Insta360 Go 3S Retro Viewfinder Offers Vintage Camera Feel
Insta360's new Retro Viewfinder accessory aims to give its Go 3S action camera a classic feel, transforming it into a handheld shooter inspired by old film cameras. However, users may find the framing limitations frustrating.

Insta360 has introduced a new accessory, the Retro Viewfinder, designed to imbue its compact Go 3S 4K action camera with the aesthetic and shooting experience of a vintage film camera. The accessory allows users to frame shots using an optical viewfinder, akin to classic cameras, offering a different approach to capturing content with the tiny device.
The Insta360 Go 3S, launched in June 2026, is a successor to the 2.7K Go 3, offering upgraded 4K capabilities. While it's a small but potent action camera, it notably lacks a built-in screen. Typically, users rely on a smartphone app for live previews and settings adjustments. This design often sees the camera mounted in positions where a screen would be impractical, like on a helmet, capturing footage with its wide-angle lens.
The Retro Viewfinder accessory aims to expand the Go 3S's versatility by making it more suitable for handheld use. Available as a standalone purchase for $47.99 or as part of the Go 3S Retro Bundle starting at $299.99, it positions the action cam as a retro-inspired shooter. This bundle includes a 64GB version of the Go 3S, making it a more affordable option than the Standard Bundle, which pairs the same camera with Insta360's Action Pod dock for $349.99.
A Nostalgic Shooting Experience
The accessory attaches to the front of the Go 3S, which slots into the viewfinder housing. A strong magnet secures the camera, passing a vigorous shake test. Instead of holding the device to your eye, the Retro Viewfinder is designed to be held at chest level, with the user looking down into the viewfinder. The camera's front panel doubles as the shutter button, with a single press for photos and a double press to start or stop video recording.
Insta360 stated that the accessory was developed to create a "vintage shooting experience inspired by classic film cameras." While this setup offers a novel way to shoot, reminiscent of older photography methods, its execution presents challenges. The viewing angle within the viewfinder is quite narrow, and even slight tilts of 15 to 20 degrees can obscure the entire image. Furthermore, the image displayed in the viewfinder is horizontally flipped, which can be disorienting.
Even with practice, users might struggle with precise framing. The combination of the camera's wide field of view and the viewfinder's limitations means the preview doesn't always accurately represent the final image. For instance, shots intended to focus on a tree line might inadvertently include unexpected elements like houses or people. While cropping in the Insta360 app can correct these framing errors, it detracts from the deliberate shooting experience the accessory aims to provide.
Framing selfies is also less straightforward. While the front lens can serve as a mirror, dark reflections, especially indoors, make precise composition difficult. The Go 3S itself has limited battery life, with its standard 310mAh capacity. An included clip-on battery pack boosts this to over 700mAh, but even then, extended use, particularly for 4K video recording or when connected to the Insta360 app, significantly drains the power. A full charge might yield around 150 photos during an hour-long walk.
Adjusting camera settings, including filters or color profiles, requires a Wi-Fi connection to a smartphone. The Retro Viewfinder does incorporate an NFC tag to speed up app connection, reducing the process to about 15-20 seconds. However, this is still less convenient than using Insta360's Action Pod, which offers on-device access to most settings via its touchscreen. While the Retro Viewfinder successfully makes the Insta360 Go 3S easier to hold and use as a handheld camera, its framing accuracy and overall usability might leave some users wanting more.
For those considering the accessory, the $47.99 price point might be acceptable for existing Go 3S owners looking for a novel shooting method. However, the bundle that includes the more functional Action Pod for an additional $50 is likely a better long-term investment, offering a more practical and versatile user experience.
