Apple's highly anticipated foldable iPhone, rumored to be named the 'iPhone Ultra,' may set a new industry standard for device repairability. According to a recent report by leaker "Instant Digital," the internal engineering of the foldable device has been meticulously designed to make it the easiest foldable phone to disassemble and repair currently available.

The leaker detailed that the device's "incredibly rigorous underlying engineering logic" has proven successful, predicting that its design will be validated by future teardown analyses. The internal component arrangement is described as both "logical yet elegant," specifically avoiding the complex ribbon cable routing that often complicates repairs on competing foldable smartphones. Instead, this approach is said to achieve "a truly high level of modularity," allowing for more straightforward access to internal parts.

This focus on repairability echoes earlier design reports from February, which also highlighted other key features of the potential foldable iPhone. These included relocated volume buttons on the top edge, Touch ID and Camera Control functionalities integrated into the right side of the device, and an iPhone Air-style camera plateau. The device is also expected to feature single punch-hole front-facing cameras and be offered in just two color options.

Internal Design Innovations

The internal structure of the rumored 'iPhone Ultra' is reportedly a significant departure from conventional foldable designs. Instant Digital explained in February that the motherboard's placement on the right side of the device allows for a more efficient cable management system. Rather than routing cables across the screen to the left side for the volume buttons, which are located there on all other iPhone models, Apple is said to be running them directly upwards. This optimization reportedly maximizes internal space, allocating it primarily to the display and battery.

This innovative stacked design is also anticipated to accommodate the largest battery ever implemented in an iPhone. Such advancements are crucial for foldables, which often face challenges balancing screen size, battery life, and device thickness. The emphasis on repairability could also align with growing consumer demand for more sustainable and long-lasting electronics, addressing a common criticism of modern smartphones.

Instant Digital has been a consistent source of information regarding Apple's foldable ambitions. Previous claims from the leaker include a projected launch price of around $2,000, an eSIM-only configuration, and that Apple's foldable displays were nearing production readiness in March. The device was also reported to be available in three storage capacities.

More recently, the leaker indicated that Apple views the Camera Control feature as a key differentiator for the foldable iPhone. The upcoming foldable is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the fall. It is anticipated to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen, powered by the A20 chip and C2 modem. Additionally, it will incorporate Touch ID and a dual-camera system on the rear.
