July is set to conclude with a significant astronomical event as the full Buck Moon reaches its peak illumination on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. While the precise moment of fullness will occur after moonset in Cleveland, residents will still have multiple opportunities to witness a luminous lunar disk appearing full. According to EarthSky, the moon will present a full appearance as it rises on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with a nearly full aspect expected on Thursday, July 30, offering a three-night viewing window for skygazers in Northeast Ohio, weather permitting.

The moon will rise in the eastern or southeastern sky, appearing larger near the horizon due to the optical illusion known as the moon illusion, not due to any change in its actual size. Its proximity to the horizon can also cause the moon to take on a yellowish or orange hue as sunlight filters through more of Earth's atmosphere, scattering blue wavelengths more effectively.

Traditionally, July's full moon is known as the Buck Moon in North America. This name originates from the rapid growth of male deer antlers during this summer period. Bucks shed and regrow these antlers annually, with new growth accelerating through the summer months before reaching their full size in autumn. The Old Farmer’s Almanac points out that these traditional full moon names, often derived from Native American, colonial American, and European sources, historically denoted the entire lunar month, not just the specific night of fullness. Alternative names include the Berry Moon among the Anishinaabe, Raspberry Moon for the Algonquin and Ojibwe, Feather Moulting Moon for the Cree, and Thunder Moon for the Western Abenaki.

Meteor Showers Amidst Lunar Brilliance

Adding to the celestial fanfare, two meteor showers are also active and will peak overnight Thursday into Friday, July 30-31. The Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids are both underway. While the Southern Delta Aquariids can produce up to 25 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, they are typically faint. The Alpha Capricornids, though producing fewer than five meteors per hour, are notable for their occasional bright fireballs. However, the brilliance of the nearly full Buck Moon is expected to significantly wash out many of the fainter meteors from both showers. For the best chance of spotting any meteors, observers should seek the darkest possible locations, position themselves with the moon behind them, and watch between midnight and dawn. The most likely sightings may be the brighter Alpha Capricornid fireballs.

Looking ahead, the Perseid meteor shower, a more prolific event, is still a couple of weeks away, with its peak expected overnight August 12-13. Conditions for the Perseids should be considerably better, as the moon will be new and will not interfere with viewing. At its peak, the Perseid shower typically offers 30 to 50 visible meteors per hour from dark, rural sites.

For Cleveland viewers, the precise moment of the full moon on July 29 occurs while the moon is below the horizon; it sets at 6:05 a.m. that morning, well before its peak illumination. The most favorable evening viewing times are: Tuesday, July 28, with moonrise at 8:36 p.m. and an illumination of 98%; Wednesday, July 29, featuring moonrise at 9:05 p.m., closest to peak fullness; and Thursday, July 30, with moonrise at 9:30 p.m. and 99.6% illumination. Thus, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are prime opportunities to witness what will appear as a full moon, with Thursday serving as a solid backup. The next full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, will occur on August 28, 2026, reaching peak illumination at 12:18 a.m., conveniently above Cleveland’s horizon.
