NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, a decorated veteran who logged a record 549 cumulative days in space across four missions, has officially retired from the agency after three decades of service. His departure marks the end of an era for American space exploration, as Fincke’s career spanned critical phases of the International Space Station program and included extensive hands-on experience with multiple spacecraft systems.

Fincke, 59, most recently served as commander of the Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2) crewed by four private astronauts to the International Space Station in May 2023. Although the mission concluded successfully, Fincke experienced a medical emergency during the mission’s return to Earth, requiring hospitalization.

During his extensive career, Fincke served as a flight engineer and commander aboard the International Space Station, undertaking numerous spacewalks to conduct critical repairs and upgrades. He was part of the Expedition 4 crew in 2002, a mission that saw him spend over 197 days in orbit. He later returned for Expeditions 7 and 8 in 2005, extending his stay to over 200 days, and again for Expedition 9 in 2004. His final mission, the Ax-2, added another 10 days to his cumulative total, solidifying his status as the American with the most time spent in orbit.

Fincke’s journey with NASA began in 1994 when he was selected as an astronaut candidate. He brought a unique background to the corps, holding degrees in aeronautical engineering and piloting experience with the U.S. Air Force. His extensive technical knowledge and calm demeanor under pressure made him a valuable asset for complex long-duration missions. He was known for his pragmatic approach to problem-solving, a trait honed during his more than 30 hours of cumulative spacewalk time. These extravehicular activities (EVAs) were often challenging, involving intricate repairs on the station’s exterior, underscoring the risks and demands of living and working in space.

His career highlights include critical roles in the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station, a collaborative project involving multiple nations. Fincke was instrumental in adapting the station to new modules and scientific payloads, ensuring its continued operational capability. His expertise was also called upon during the early days of commercial crew transportation, where he played a significant role in training and mission planning for the SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner programs.

The medical incident during the Ax-2 mission, while a significant personal challenge, did not deter his commitment to spaceflight. His return to active duty after recovery demonstrated remarkable resilience. Fincke’s retirement concludes a distinguished career that has inspired countless individuals to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

NASA has not yet named a successor for Fincke’s specific role, but his contributions leave a lasting legacy. The agency continues to push the boundaries of human spaceflight with its Artemis program aiming to return astronauts to the Moon and eventually send them to Mars.
