The booster is expected to impact the lunar surface on August 4, 2026, at approximately 5,400 miles per hour, according to NASA and independent astronomers. This marks the first time a human-made object of this size is known to intentionally crash into the Moon.

The object in question is the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket that SpaceX launched in February 2015 for a deep space climate observatory mission. After completing its primary task, the booster was left in a highly elliptical orbit that gradually perturbed over the years. Scientists have been tracking its trajectory and have confirmed that an impact is imminent.

A New Lunar Landmark

The impending collision is not just a celestial event; it's poised to leave a permanent mark. Astronomers anticipate that the impact will create a new crater on the Moon's surface, likely between 20 to 30 meters in diameter. "I have a high degree of confidence that this is the Falcon 9 booster from the DSCOVR mission," Gray stated in a recent update.

While this particular booster is on a one-way trip to the Moon, countless other defunct satellites and rocket stages orbit Earth. The collision serves as a stark reminder of the increasing amount of artificial material in near-Earth space and the need for better management and disposal strategies.
