NASA scientists have identified the largest newly formed crater discovered anywhere in the solar system, a 222-meter wide impact scar on the Moon that did not exist before spring 2024. The discovery was made during a routine quality check of lunar maps, which revealed a bright spot surrounded by a dark halo.

The crater, estimated to be the result of an asteroid impact, is considered a "once-in-a-century" event. Its significant size and recent formation make it a remarkable find for planetary scientists studying celestial impacts. The bright ejecta blanket and the dark halo surrounding the crater are visual indicators of a relatively fresh impact event.

An Unforeseen Discovery

The unexpected finding came from data collected by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). While reviewing high-resolution imagery, researchers noticed the anomaly. The crater is so large it would dwarf many terrestrial structures, measuring wider than two American football fields laid end-to-end.

"We were looking at images from the LRO Camera, and we saw this bright spot with a dark halo," explained a NASA spokesperson. "Upon closer inspection, we realized it was a brand new crater, and an exceptionally large one at that." The impact is believed to have occurred between March and May 2024.

This newly formed crater is a significant addition to our understanding of impact processes. Scientists can now study its morphology, the composition of the ejecta, and the resulting seismic waves, if any were detectable, to learn more about the nature of the impacting object and the lunar surface response. Such events, while rare, are crucial for understanding the geological evolution of celestial bodies.

The asteroid responsible for the impact is estimated to have been roughly the size of a six-story building. While this might seem small in astronomical terms, its direct impact on the Moon's surface has created a feature of unprecedented scale for a recent impact. Previous new craters found on the Moon have been considerably smaller, making this discovery particularly noteworthy.

Studying lunar cratering provides vital clues about the bombardment history of Earth and other rocky planets. The Moon, lacking an atmosphere and active geology to erase impact marks, serves as an invaluable archive. Each new crater offers a snapshot of current or recent impact activity in the inner solar system.
